Teachers have been urged to follow in the footsteps of activist Matthew Goniwe.
This emerged at a World Teachers’ Day event to honour Goniwe in support of this year’s theme, which is ‘Young Teachers: The future of the Profession.’
The two-day event which features Goniwe’s memorial lecture is taking place at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in East London today and tomorrow.
Eastern Cape department of education spokesperson, Malibongwe Mtima, said Goniwe was a dedicated educator and an activist for social transformation. Mtima said Goniwe is recognized by the department for his contribution in making education a central pillar for knowledge development.
Mtima said: “His dedication, inspiration, kindness and encouraging high level of performance and emphasizing excellence in being a teacher has seen the department celebrate his life in various ways. The memorial lecture will be accompanied by activities to empower educators.
Since education is the mother of all professions, the department has opted to join the world in increasing recognition and respect for this profession. The department also believes observing this day will help in inspiring learners to join the noble profession.”
