The OR Tambo district has been identified as a hot spot of child malnutrition. Children between birth and five years are the most affected. The department of social development is currently working with its stakeholders and Port St Johns Municipality has launched an integrated mother and child development and support programme at Kwanyathi village. The programme is aimed at eradicating malnutrition through the development of women.
