Premier Oscar Mabuyane celebrated the historic achievements of Nyanga High School matriculant, Lomso Dumezweni, who made his family, school and community proud as one of the top matric achievers in the country.
Dumezweni received 100% in Physical Sciences, 97% in Mathematics, 98% in Life Sciences, 91% in Geography, 87% in English home and Xhosa home languages as well as 100% for Life Orientation.
The 18-year-old pupil from Dutywa attributed his success to hard work and effectiveness. His dream is to pursue medicine, with a desire to break the curse of chronic disease-related deaths in his community.
Nyanga High School in Ngcobo achieved a 95.45% pass rate this year with no less than 147 of the 154 pupils who sat for the exams, making it. The class had 88 Bachelor’s passes, 38 diplomas and 21 higher certificates.
Mabuyane told the pupils they did not have to wait until they were old to make a difference. “We have to aspire to inspire before we expire. The matric class of 2019 made history and you must improve and develop in Mathematics. The province improved by 6% and Nyanga must improve by 5%.
“We also believe that the Eastern Cape will make it into the 80% pass rate league in the country, however, Nyanga is already a part of that league. If you hear talks about schools with a target of 100% in South Africa, Nyanga is included. I am grateful to you all, you are what defines the struggle icons of the land,” the Premier said.
