This was the situation at Nonesi Mall in Komani a short while ago. Scores of residents, many of them social grant beneficiaries, are out to collect their cash and buy groceries they hope will carry them through the 21-day lockdown the country is currently under, to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Police officers are on hand to maintain order at the mall and supermarkets and have their hands full ensuring residents do not jump the queue and maintain the required “social distance”. There are more than 1 300 Covid-19 infections in South Africa currently and five people have died from the virus. Residents are required to remain indoors during the nationwide lockdown and are urged to maintain good hygiene including regularly washing their hands and applying hand sanitisers, among others. For assistance with the virus residents can call 0800 029 999.
