FIFTY teams from Chris Hani District received sports equipment worth R180000 from the district department of sport, recreation, arts and culture (Desrac) last week.
Desrac manager Thoko Oliphant said the department had made plans to host leagues throughout the district in its 2016/2017 financial year.
She said the league was decided upon after Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula made a call for schools sport to be active and for elderly people to become involved in sport.
“In the old days, there used to be sports games every Wednesday and Saturday. People used to go to stadiums to watch matches. We want to bring back that culture.”
Oliphant said the municipalities were involved in different leagues of netball, boxing, football and rugby.
She said the majority of the teams that received the equipment were from rural areas.
“We also provided transport worth R388000 during the league tournaments.
