Lessons for pupils

Date:

THE Ezibeleni Development Agency, a non-profit organisation set up by people who grew up and were schooled in Ezibeleni, has started Saturday classes for more than 300 pupils with volunteer lecturers from the Ikhala Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College.

EDA spokesman Solly Baliso said the organisation was established last year and was open to anyone who identified him or herself with the development of the Ezibeleni community, especially in the areas of schools and skills development, entrepreneurship development (township economy) and sport development, which was the agency’s flagship programme.

The classes, at Sixishe Junior Secondary School, have 331 pupils from Sixishe and 10 other Grade 8’s from schools around Ezibeleni.

The classes started in February. “They are tutored in English and mathematics by volunteer lecturers from Ikhala TVET College, Sixishe teachers and retired teachers.”

Baliso said the intention was to grow the programme to Grade 12 level.

“We also intend to host winter and spring schools to ensure that the pupils in the programme are assisted adequately and the EDA thanks the principal, Khunjulwa Maphangwana, and her staff for the partnership,” he said.

Plans were to involve the education department in the future.
