Unforgettable tragic event in Marikana

FIVE years ago South Africa came to a virtual standstill when 34 miners were shot dead by police on August 16, 2012 during a mining strike at Marikana in the North West Province. The miners were protesting for raise of their salaries to R12 500. A further 78 were injured and 259 arrested. The shooting birthed the Farlam commission tasked to investigate the shootings and resultant deaths.
