Liberation hero not forgotten

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the death of Black Consciousness leader and liberation struggle hero, Steve Bantu Biko, while detained by the South African apartheid security forces in 1977.

According to http://www.sahistory.org.za/ Biko, at the age of 30, was arrested on the outskirts of Grahamstown on August 18, 1977 and sent to the Port Elizabeth police cell. He was chained to a grill at night and left to lie on urine-soaked blankets and stripped naked and kept in leg-irons for 48 hours.

Biko was then transferred to a prison hospital in Pretoria where he died.
