STANDING TALL: Christ the King Cathedral in Komani Picture: FILE

The Cathedral of Christ the King was built after a site overlooking the former Walter Everett Gardens was identified in the early 1950s. The new cathedral was consecrated in 24 June, 1959 with Bishop JB Rosenthal, who had served as the first Bishop of the Catholic Church in Queenstown, being the founder and patron of the new building.

According to Alan Greaves’ book, ‘Tell Me of Komani’ the cathedral was built by Ivan Barac, who was also the architect.

The tower of the cathedral is about 38 metres high and has three bells which were cast in Germany, named Faith, Hope and Charity.
