THE Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) will be commemorating the annual International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR), observed annually on October 13, by showing support to a Middelburg education centre for children.
The day annually celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing exposure to disasters and raising awareness.
The theme for this year is “Home Safe Home”.
CHDM spokeswoman Thobeka Mqamelo said the district authority would, in line with the Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002 which refers to the prevention of disasters and mitigating its effects, have programs targeting communities in raising awareness at ward level in all its local municipalities.
In previous years, CHDM commemorated the IDDR through choral music performed by schools from the district, visual art, and drama. The performance was mainly to raise awareness about man made or natural disasters.
This year, the municipality was adopting a different approach.
“We identified an early childhood development centre in Middelburg, Inxuba Yethemba LM, Masigcinane Educare Centre which had an extremely dilapidated structure, unsafe for habitation, especially by children. The support extended to the centre includes a renovation of the structure and provision of equipment.”
The centre will be handed over to the beneficiaries on November 1 at the Siyabulela Community Hall in Middelburg at 10am.
