THE Eastern Cape police have asked members of the public to be on the lookout for three awaiting-trial prisoners who escaped from custody at the Elliotdale police station on Saturday.
In a statement police spokesman Captain Khaya Tonjeni said an internal inquiry into the escape was underway after the escape shortly before 6pm.
Two police members were allegedly overpowered by the inmates and locked inside a cell during the escape.
The names of the escapees are : Bonginkosi Ndlevu, 24, from Elliotdale who had been arrested for armed robbery in Willowvale in April, Akhonaj Paji, also of Elliotdale who was in custody on chargers or rape and murder in April and Mziwonke Coli, 32, arrested for armed robbery in Mqanduli in November last year.
Police have warned that the men are considered to be dangerous and have asked members of the public not to try and apprehend them.
