Nal’ibali’s World Read Aloud Day celebration is fast becoming one of the biggest literacy drives in South Africa, reaching thousands of children and adults every year in its bid to raise awareness of the importance of reading aloud in children’s literacy development and school success.

Each year Nal’ibali commissions a brand-new story for the day and translates it into all 11 official languages; asking caregivers, communities, and fellow NGOs to join them in reading it aloud to children in their home languages.
Last year the campaign read aloud to almost 720 000 children.
This year, Blind SA are coming on board to share the story with blind and partially sighted children through the production of a braille story card which Nali’bali will be sharing with schools in its network.
Nal’ibali hopes to reach 1 000 000 children in 2018. To find out more about Nal’ibali or how you can participate in World Read Aloud Day on February 1 visit www.nalibali.org.
Blind SA will also observe World Read Aloud Day on February 1.
