THE Komani police have arrested 21 people on charges of public violence, malicious damage to property and contravention of the National Road and Traffic Act following service delivery protests that started in the area early today.
The suspects include 17 women and four men.
Police spokesman Captain Khaya Tonjeni confirmed that a community hall in Ezibeleni had been gutted.
“Police continue to maintain a heavy presence in the are and are moving between the N6 and the road connecting Cathcart and Whittlesea (to Komani).
Tonjeni said the situation was volatile and the actions of protesters were being monitored.
“We appeal to road users to drive on the affected routes around Komani and neighbouring towns with caution.”
He said motorists should rather try to use alternative routes to avoid delays.
