Sterkstroom-born comedian Mawethu Soko, well known as comedian Malume, had locals at Nonesi Mall in stitches at his recent DVD launch.
Soko, who is currently based in East London, launched a two part DVD entitled iPhupha lika malume. He said the DVD was released last year and he had been promoting it in different towns.
“My love for comedy started when I was in primary school. I could not take courses after high school due to financial constraints. I launched my first DVD in 2009 and I have been doing it ever since.” Soko said he later took courses to advance his skills and had since released eight DVDs under his name.
“My previous videos were not doing well, but my latest release has been receiving positive feedback and I have been getting a lot of support from a number of radio stations.”
Growing up, Soko said he was an active individual who was always enthusiastic and interested in new things. “I was very active, even in sport, and as someone who was paying school fees I wanted to participate and experience various activities. I then realised that my strongest point was making people laugh. That’s when I realised my passion was in comedy.”
He said he was different from other comedians as his jokes were simple and appealed to all ages. “I joke about anything that is of interest to everyone. Young children enjoy my jokes too because I do not use vulgar language.”
Soko said his dream was to see material produced by talented local comedians being broadcast on well known television channels. Anyone who would like to purchase Soko’s DVD can reach him via Facebook.
