Run attracts avid athletes

The second annual Komani Road Run which attracted avid runners from several parts of the province and was based at Mans Pub and Braai was “a big success,” thanks to local sponsors.

The 5 and 10km fun runs accommodated people in different categories, from youth, women, men and veterans, to ensure it was inclusive of all.

However, Phakama Athletics Club manager Simon Jongile said he was disappointed that few children participated, during athletics season in schools.

Our timing to host this road run was perfect because it coincided with athletics in school and runners are at a time where they are either sharpening their speed, improving their fitness and or some shedding weight. I also coach children at the club and was expecting to see them in their numbers as they are doing athletics at schools. However, we are thankful to local participants and those who came from various places in the EC to support us.

Jongile thanked the local department of sport, recreation, arts and culture (DSRAC) and sponsors of the event.

A Komani sponsor area manager, Fundi Ceza, said they sponsored with for participants as part of their social corporate responsibility.

We believe that. for the youth to stay away from drugs and criminal activities, they needed to be active and support initiatives that promote physical exercises. There is still a chance to get involved in sport, especially the unemployed who could possibly be groomed and make a career from their talents.”

The overall winner of the road run was Dutywa-based Zwelonke Athletics Club member Yanga Malusi who finished the 10km run in 33 minutes, 40 seconds, followed by Zuko Kupiso and Sive Tshokotsha.
