With the schools set to close on Wednesday until after the Easter holidays, many students will be making their way home from different parts of the country to the Eastern Cape.

This will result in increased traffic volumes on the provincial roads.

The department of transport, safety and liaison, MEC Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe has also cautioned parents not to encourage children to go away on holidays, to limit the spread of Covid 19.

Tikana-Gxothiwe said: “We call on people to cooperate with the strict government measures announced by the president to try and limit the transmission of the coronavirus.

Let us not gamble with the lives of children. This will also remove the possibility of road crashes that have also claimed dozens of lives daily.”

She said law enforcement officers would remain on high alert.
