19 people have been reported as victims of the building that collapsed on the R61 Main Road in Ngcobo today. Five people, two males and three females, were reported to have succumbed to death. Four people who are critically injured were rushed to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital.
DR. AB Xuma Local Municipality spokesperson, Sivuyile Myeko said seven people are currently receiving medical care in All Saints Hospital and three people have been discharged.
“Hon Mayor Cllr Siyabulela Zangqa expressed his sincere condolences to the families of the deceased,” said Myeko.
According to Dr. AB Xuma media statement, Cllr Zangqa said: “This is indeed a tragic incident and my thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones in this disastrous event. We would also like to thank community members for assisting and showing support in this dreadful period. We are praying for a full and speedy recovery for those that are injured.”
“The Hon Mayor further commended the disaster management team, emergency personnel, SAPS and other entities who were part of the rescue operation,” said Myeko.
According to a statement issued by Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM), CHDM Executive Mayor, Cllr Lusanda Sizani also sent his condolences to the family of those who lost their lives and speedy recovery to the injured people.
