No finance chair yet

THE VACANT position of the political head at Enoch Mgijima since the resignation of former executive mayor Nozi Makanda as a councillor candidate for the ANC, became a bone of contention during a special council meeting last Wednesday.

Council speaker Mzoxolo Peter announced standing committees, with the finance committee chairman left vacant. This was the third meeting in 12 days of the new council.

United Front councillor Aaron Mhlontlo was the first to fire a salvo when he wanted to know why the position was vacant.

“Why is the position still vacant when we have more than 60 councillors? Maybe that position has been reserved for someone. Can we have information on what is happening? How is that committee going to function without a chairman?” he asked.

Mhlontlo said it would be careless to adopt the committees and then hear there was no report from that committee as it had no chairman. Peter said there was a process to fill the position, adding there would be “no vacuum”.

“As soon as the process has been completed, council will be told.”

EFF whip Luthando Amos requested the structures act be allowed to function and council to work according to rules. DA councillor Malibongwe Xhelisilo said appointment of the mayoral committee was the prerogative of the mayor and not a political party. He said the party could appoint people without any capacity. Executive mayor Lindiwe Gunuza Nkwentsha said she was not ready to appoint someone as the finance political head. She said she was still looking at certain criteria and the law and then she would appoint someone.

Makanda resigned as a councillor candidate for the ANC on August 19 during the Enoch Mgijima inaugural committee meeting. The Rep had been reliably informed she would have been deployed as the portfolio head for finance. Her resignation letter was read during the meeting.

“This serves to tender my resignation as a councillor candidate for the ANC in Enoch Mgijima Municipality. I will not take oath as a public representative in the forthcoming council,” her letter said. She did not respond this week to a text message with questions.
