OVER 20 000 people were present at the annual SLUSH conference in Finland that was attended by local University of Johannesburg(UJ) Enactus president Masonwabe Fuma, who originally hails from Komani.

A SLUSH conference is a two-day international startup and investor event, organized annually in Helsinki, Finland.

Fuma said the trip was aimed at forging working relations between the Laurea University of Applied Sciences and UJ.

“ UJ has an aim of hosting a SLUSH conference on the African continent because it is only held in Europe. When it moves to South Africa, it will not be considered as a UJ or Johannesburg conference but will be for everyone on the African continent.”

He said the meeting aimed to identify what the two universities do differently and to establish an exchange programme.
“We noticed that business is considered to be a culture in Finland and this is the mindset we should adopt especially for youth unemployment.

He said young people should explore options other than having to depend on government to get funding for their businesses.

The conference included sessions of panel discussions about entrepreneurship and how to generate business ideas.

On the third day of their visit Fuma said they were treated to dinner with the South African Ambassador in Finland and Estonia, Carmen Jolene Smidt.
“She wanted to know about us and how she could assist. We forged working relationship and she will be helping us in bring the SLUSH conference to Africa.”
