HUMAN Settlements Department Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has indicated that government was working on laws to stop the sale of RDP houses, which should be a possession of families for generations.
In a statement published in the SAnews.gov.za, Sisulu said when government gave the homes to the needy, the homes should be for the whole family and not for one person. Sisulu was speaking in the North West province during a Human Settlements Indaba last Thursday.
“From April 2017, national government will implement a centralised National Housing Needs Register (NHNR), which is a centralised database of all those who require housing assistance in the country. Currently we are processing all waiting lists from municipalities to ensure that we have a credible national centralised database. We want to ensure that there is credibility in the process of allocating houses,” Sisulu said.
The minister confirmed she was working with the provincial MECs of human settlements to ensure that all contractors and material suppliers were paid within 30 days. She said she had instructed director general Thabane Zulu to prioritise the payment of small contractors and businesses at all times. “If they do not have capacity to process the necessary documents, they must be assisted. We must pay our service providers within 30 days. They need the money to pay their workers.”
