PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma has wished all South African families a peaceful and joyous International Day of Families which is observed across the world under the theme “Families, education and well-being”.

The United Nations declared May 15 as the International Day of Families. He said the International Day of Families remained one of the most significant days declared by the United Nations to promote awareness of issues relating to families. “And to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families. Families remain a pillar of every individual and society, therefore on this day we call on SA families to promote solid family values,” Zuma said.

He said the values will help individuals to make right decisions in life that will contribute to nation building and promoting human rights. Government acknowledged the challenges facing families including youth unemployment, housing, health, education, substance abuse and societal social ills that affect the standing of families. “As government we will continue to work hard to address these challenges to ensure a better life for all,” the president said. .

The day also aimed to promote the importance of knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development.
