TODAY marks national Heritage Day – but it’s far more than just a public holiday for South Africans.
Heritage Day is a day which, according to Wikipedia, encourages citizens to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions as being part of a nation and a country that belongs to all its people.
Heritage Day was originally known as Shaka Day which commemorated the Zulu King, with the Inkatha Freedom Party arguing for its retention in 1995. It became known as Heritage Day, with a media campaign in 2005 also encouraging the day as National Braai Day – a day to get South Africans to indulge in what is a proudly South African tradition, the braai.
However you celebrate Heritage Day today, do so with pride in the knowledge that we live in a rich and diverse country which is filled with opportunity.
