People questioned in Ngcobo shooting but no significant developments, say police

THE police have indicated that people have been taken in for questioning in connection with the fatal shooting of five police members and an off-duty soldier at the Ngcobo police station early on Wednesday but have emphasised that this was normal procedure during an investigation.

Police spokesman Captain Khaya Tonjeni said the police understood the anxiety of people in asking about the process of the investigation but that speculation and false reports had surfaced on social media and in the mainstream media.

“There is some great support from the public in different ways on different platforms,” he said, adding that the task team which had been formed to investigate the attack and killings, had made good progress and had “covered a lot of ground.”

Tonjeni said the police would make a formal announcement should there be any significant development in the investigation.

“In the meantime, we will refrain from reporting any further miniscule details on the progress of the investigation. We will wait until there is something tangible and meaningful.”

He said the police was respecting the process of the investigation and would allow the work of the task team to continue “without any further challenges or miscommunication.”
