Eluhewini Ladies FC star striker, Oyisa Marhasi was capped by the national, Bantwana when they faced Zambia in a U17 World Cup qualifier on Friday.

Bantwana were unsuccessful in their campaign, losing 2-0 to the hosts. They now prepare for the home leg of the fixture which will be in Johannesburg on March 14.

Marhasi last featured for Bantwana in October at the Cosafa U17 championships in Mauritius when she made her mark on the international stage, becoming South Africa’s top scorer in the competition.

The Ngcobo-born striker said the second call-up was a motivation to work even harder. “For me it is a motivation to keep doing what I have been doing and work even harder, to try and inspire other young players because it is very possible.”

Eluhewini coach Dumisa Gcina said Marhasi had exceeded all her expectations. “The only thing I can say is wow. I am so surprised. When I first saw Marhasi I thought she would be a good player in the Sasol League, but I never in my wildest imaginations thought she would go this far.”

Gcina added her success had not only motivated her teammates but inspired her home village.

“When she left for Johannesburg on Friday, she was supposed to be competing in the Chris Hani West district athletics competition after being number one in the preliminary races. Every time the team plays we have great attendance because people want to see her. Even when she was competing in the athletics, people came out to support her,” said Gcina.

Marhasi has also been announced as the brand ambassador for Build It.
