THE fight against cancer took centre stage as the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) divisional co-ordinator in the Eastern Cape, Vuvu Gqibitole hosted an awareness campaign at the Nonesi Mall on Saturday.Gqibitole said the event was aimed at commemorating World Cancer Day, which took place on February 4, and providing people with information.

The theme for the day was, “I can, we can, do something about cancer”.Gqibitole said the aim of the outreach was to highlight the need for prevention and early detection. She said they were hoping to teach more people about cancer, its prevention and early detection.

“The campaign was attended by more than 120 people. We had mall patrons and employees of different businesses visiting the stall for different reasons like information and support. The people were optimistic and appreciative that Cansa had made an effort to reach out.”

Cansa will be back in Komani next month. “We have an ongoing service in the Chris Hani area. We have trained volunteers in various areas including Whittlesea, Lady Frere, Tarkastad, Cradock, Ezibeleni and Dordrecht. They do patient support and awareness campaigns at schools, prisons, community gatherings and door-to-door visits.”

Cancer is one of the leading killers throughout both the developed and developing world. The illness affects one in four South Africans.
