QUEEN’S College again walked away with the high school sevens rugby under-17 tournament cup at the Mlungisi Stadium on Friday, with Dordrecht taking second position, as they did during the inaugural tournament last year.
Maria Louw were the first to lose against Queen’s when they was beaten 32-17, KwaKomani annihilated John Noah 20-0 while Luvuyo Lerumo held their own against Dordrecht until the last minutes of the game, when they lost 10-5.
John Noah again failed to score and were humiliated by Nkwanca 35-0 while KwaKomani, despite the huge support, succumbed to Queen’s by 25-0.
John Noah again lost to Luvuyo Lerumo 12-0, Maria Louw beat KwaKomani by a small margin of 15-17 and Dordrecht beat Get Ahead 25-17. Luvuyo Lerumo lost 5-17 against Ndlovukazi.
For third and fourth positions, KwaKomani faced off with Nkwanca and the latter lost 20-10, while Queen’s and Dordrecht battled it out for the first and second positions. Queen’s won the final 32-5.
Queen’s walked away with the cup, Dordrecht the shield, KwaKomani the bowl and Nkwanca the plate. Project manager Mawethu Maseti said The Rep, the sport, recreation, arts and culture department and Fischer’s Dairy were some of the sponsors.
He said Jacksons Delta would sponsor the tourney next year. The rugby sub-union provided voluntary referees, who were not paid.
Maseti said the tournament was to promote rugby and improve its standard in the area.
“The tournament was a success with potential to grow bigger and better. All teams were happy and they enjoyed taking part. They want to come back stronger next year.”
Maseti said the tournament review would be on March 2 and Enoch Mgijima Municipality wanted to be more involved next year.
