A provincial crime statistics stakeholder meeting in Zwelitsha today, has heard that concern exists over the spike in sexual offences in the Eastern Cape.
The meeting follows on the presentation of the provincial crime statistics by Safety and Liaison MEC Weziwe Tikana and Eastern Cape provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Lizizwe Ntshinga in Aliwal North in October.
Ntshinga said today’s meeting served as a formal briefing of stakeholders on the status and progress in the fight against crime.
She said the rapes of young girls and old women remained of great concern with thorough investigations and good work in the courtroom by the police providing a measure of relief.
A total of 64 life sentences had been handed down by the courts to various sexual offenders recently.
“These actions and quality detective work confirms our commitment to fighting crime,” she said.
She said five additional mobile stations and 158 vehicles provided to the police since the start of the financial year also aided in the fight against crime.
