On this day…

According to South African history online in 2003 South Africa’s national soccer team, Bafana Bafana, played an England star-studded team in a friendly international match at Absa Stadium in Durban. The match was to mark South Africa’s campaign to host World Cup finals in 2010. The England team was composed of highly rated world-class players including their captain David Beckham. The halftime score was 1-1 with England scoring in the first minute of the game through the header of Gareth Southgate.   The England team took the lead again after the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Brian Baloyi spilt the ball in the path of Emile Heskey who guided the ball into an empty net for England’s winning goal Picture: FILE
