On Tuesday Safa Eastern Cape announced that it was advised that all leagues in the province be suspended following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s coronavirus declaration of a national disaster and prohibition of gatherings of more than 100 people.

In a circular to all Safa regions, Safa acting CEO, Thamsanqa Mokoena said; “This measure has a direct impact on all our football activities, particularly matches, as most if not all are attended by more than a 100 people. Some of the football authorities else in the world have taken measures such as playing matches in empty stadiums. This response has proven not to be effective in minimizing the spread of the virus.”

“On behalf of the national executive committee of the South African Football Association (Safa), all members are advised to suspend and or postpone all football matches and football events that are attended by more than a 100,” said Mokoena.
