THE Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform handed over gardening equipment to various high schools last week.
Luvuyo Lerumo Senior Secondary School and KwaKomani Comprehensive School were among the schools that received gardening tools .
Acting principal of KwaKomani, Cozoma Tyalimpi, said she was grateful and excited by the donation.
“The pupils have a vegetable garden and our caretaker, Solomon Mgwigwi, maintains the school grounds, but we have a problem with stray animals that eat the crops.”
Mgwigwi said he was relieved because his workload would be lighter.
Consumer studies teacher and head of grounds, Lindiwe Mvalo, said she encouraged the pupils to further their studies in agriculture after they had matriculated and was encouraging the school to “go green”.
Agricultural adviser of the department, Kwezi Booi, said the donation was aimed at encouraging pupils to learn more about agriculture as it could later boost their entrepreneurial skills.
Teacher at Luvuyo Lerumo, Fundiswa Foslag, said she was initiating agricultural studies as a subject for Grade 10 pupils.
“I believe this subject will help pupils in the future.”
Each school received two wheelbarrows, three forks, two spades, three watering cans, two hoes and four packets of vegetable seeds.
